BioIQ’s Senior Innovation Director, Alvonice Spencer, was recently featured in Health Data Management where he shared five tactics payers can use to improve Star Ratings. The Medicare performance data, which is collected by CMS and shared publicly, impacts member perception and enrollment, as well as health plans’ revenue and ability to earn quality incentives.

Many health plans ramp up efforts to close care gaps related to Star Ratings quality measures in the fourth quarter of each year, just ahead of the annual reporting deadline at year-end. As this year’s reporting period comes to a close, Spencer’s recommendations yield strategies that health plans can employ throughout the year to reduce the burden of last-minute member engagement programs.

To achieve the performance improvements needed to yield Star Ratings gains, Spencer encourages health plans to leverage analytics and innovative care pathways to offer members personalized and convenient ways to engage in their health. His member engagement recommendations include:

  • Designing programs around members most likely to take action
  • Collaborating with providers to increase the chances of member follow-through
  • Focusing on quality metrics that are ripe for big improvements
